Noisy Toshiba MMS Air Conditioning Unit

Don’t believe Toshiba’s advertising that their MMS and SMMS units are quiet!…. Toshiba Advertisment:- “As a result of detailed improvements such as the fan drive circuit, fan blade design and construction of the outlet duct our design teams have successfully reduced outdoor unit noise levels. These studies have eliminated the peak noise levels at start up, normally associated with fixed-speed systems, by using soft start controls. An optional night operation/sound deadening control circuit board is available for reducing noise levels overnight by limiting the system’s maximum operation. This has resulted in reduced operating noise levels. The exclusive use of inverter-driven compressors also significantly contributes to reducing noise emissions.”
We have an MMS unit which is very, very noisy.
Mostly the noise comes from the Inverter unit! We have suggested that the unit is faulty but Tosbiba advise it is operating within specifications! We have suggested that the unit be changed out for an SMMS unit but Toshiba advise there would be no improvement in the noise levels!
This battle with Toshiba has been raging since the day of installation January 2006!

You should purchase a Goodman, the only thing you hear from it is the compressor. Yours sounds like a airplane.

I don’t think that’s the way it’s suppose to work. First your condenser fan start up at full speed (not modulating), then abruptly shuts off, then you compressor ramps up (without the fan) and ramps down just as it reaches full load.
Check it checked out, there’s something wrong with it.

new toshiba inverter system is no where near as noisy as the one on the video, very very silent, i can prove it by uploading a video of my system for you to see for your self !! ( ps my model is ras-m10nkv-e )had it just over a year now and am very pleased with it.

check the fan mount …
check the fan mount and compressor vibration eliminators (rubber pads at the base).. check required voltage for compressor and your power supply also check running amps and suction pressure… ive heard comps. hum before before becoz of low voltage power supply… cheers n keep me posted

Almost all of the noise is in the Inverter Mode!
n the A/C constant speed mode the noise is mostly an air rushing sound.
Initally Carrier/Toshiba thought the fan was not pitched correctly causing backpressure and hunting, they replaced the fan unit – there was no improvement!
The unit has been shifted to the backyard, however this has only served to move the noise problem, not resolve it!
The clanging banging is getting worse!

would be interested in finding out which mode of operation it was running in, sounds like the fan is the main cause of the noise as when it shuts off the inverter compressor can be heard ramping up&down nicely,the ratchet sound could be pmv’s opening/closing or something catching in the fan,it certainly does sound like you have excesssive noise there,but its probably amplified by the fact that its to close to the wall and fence, this could also be the reason why your fan is running at full speed
