Air-conditioners: Webster's Timeline History, 1906 - 2006

Webster’s bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on “Air-conditioners,” including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Air-conditioners in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Air-conditioners when it is used in proper noun form. Webster’s timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage (more…)

Cooling Off in Apartments or Rentals

You sit in your favorite recliner, the sweat running down your back as you fan yourself with the newspaper. “Blast this 100-degree heat and humidity,” you think to yourself. “If only I had some air conditioning, this wouldn’t be so bad.” This is the plight of anyone who lives in an apartment or a rental home during the height of summer. Who wants to invest money in a permanent air conditioner that you will need to leave behind when you move out? Well, there is finally a great solution to this dilemma: get a portable air conditioner. You will be able to cool off in your apartment or rental home, and then when you are ready to leave, your handy portable air conditioner can come with you, too.

One of the nice features of portable air conditioners is that you can find them in several sizes, so you can get just the right one to meet your cooling needs. If you have a small place, there are portable air conditioners that can beautifully cool 200 square feet. For larger areas, you can find great portable units that will maintain a comfortable temperature in 500 square feet, and any range in between. As the name implies, these air conditioners can move because they have coasters on the bottom that allow them to roll effortlessly from place to place. If you want to cool the bedroom at night, and an office area in the morning, you can do it all with a portable air conditioner.

If you have allergies, then air quality is a huge issue for you. Many portable air conditioners can actually improve the air circulation in rooms with poor ventilation, and can use ionizers and filters to trap impurities from the air. Dehumidifiers are also available in some units.

Some of the portable air conditioners are very small, and run very quietly, which is a plus if you have it in the bedroom and you are trying to sleep. They come in manual and remote control varieties.

A permanent air conditioner can be a big power waster. In contrast, you will enjoy cost savings due to the efficient manner in which portable air conditioners function. Many recycle the moisture captured in the room, and use that water to cool the cooling coils. This helps the unit to run more economically, because it is not over-taxed by the demands placed on it.

Probably the best part of having a portable air conditioner is the fact that when you decide to move out of your apartment or rental home, the air conditioner will be going with you. No more money down the drain–now your super-functional portable air conditioner is yours to keep.

Inexpensive and quiet ways of cooling a room?

My room is very hot. I already have three fans, and they are usually at maximum power, but I can’t sleep like that. The window is open… I would turn on the air conditioner, but I’m not allowed to, probably because of money. So, does anyone have any suggestions for long term solutions that would cost less overall than running the air conditioner more often? Thanks!

take a cool shower right before going to bed, it will mellow you out and become cooler when your fans hit you….
or offer to pay the electricty bill….thats what i do so i can have my ac

Solar Air Conditioning

This video starts with a visual montage of the sheer number of air conditioners used on our street in Cairo, Egypt, describing them as energy parasites that actually increase the heat of the surrounding air. It then shows the vacuum tube heat pipe solar absorption cooling air conditioning system installed by solar engineer Les Hamasaki at the Debs Park Audubon Environmental Center in Los Angeles. Les Hamasaki describes the 10-ton solar chiller and we conclude with a note about how solar chillers not only eliminate the need for air conditioners, but the need for entire power plants. They also produce hot water and can be used for sterilizing and desalinating contaminated water. As we say in the video, solar air conditioners “USE THE SUN’S LIGHT TO DEFEAT THE SUN’S HEAT!” Thus, the hotter it gets outside, the cooler it gets inside!

Finding Air Conditioning Contractors in California

Finding air conditioning contractors anywhere in the world can be difficult, however the matter of finding air conditioning contractors in California is especially hard. This is largely due to the fact that there is a great need for air conditioning contractors in California in general.

After all, when you compare the percentage of people who need an air conditioning contractor to the number of these contractors that are actually available, it is easy to the disparity. However, there are still ways that you can try to get an air conditioning contractor for yourself.

The Need for Air Conditioning Contractors in California

California is one of the warmest places in the world, and so it obviously makes sense then as to why there are so many people that need air conditioning in that area. Ii is also home to Silicon Valley and Hollywood; places where affluent people live and work who can not function with air conditioning. In fact, almost the entire Californian population has at least some form of air conditioning, and so this also goes to explain why there is such a need for air conditioning contractors in California.

There are those customers who already have units which need them to be repaired or reinstalled. Adding to that are new people constantly moving into the area who will need to find a contractor to install their unit or system for them.

Finding Air Conditioning Contractors in California

When it comes to the process of actually finding an air conditioner contractor, first simply ask around. Perhaps your friends or family members have the number of someone they know and trust. References are always more reliable than flipping through the yellow pages. This will not only help you get the names of some qualified contractors, but your friend or relative might put in a good word so as to get you a quicker appointment and relive you from the misery of the scorching heat..

Because there is such a sparse number of contractors as compared to the ratio of people who need them, you may just have to hire a contractor from outside of the area. Allthough this is unfortunate because it will most likely end up costing you a bit more money, in the end all that really matters is that you have your air conditioning system installed properly so that you and your family can live in comfort.

Portable Air-Conditioner questions?

I’m thinking of getting a portable air-conditioner mainly to cool up my beedroom before I go to bed, so I can get some sleep in the heat (i’m a fairly light sleeper). But somebody told me that they need to be sticking out of a window or something (which is right next to bed, so a unit couldnt fit between) and are only decent for in-land places because they cant take away humid heat? Also are they very quiet, in case I did leave it on while I sleep? Can somebody answer these questions and tell me a bit more about them and their effectiveness?
Like it would be ideal if I could move it from room to room, the same as a portable electric heater.

an air conditioner MUST exhaust the hot air it produces outside. a/c units are very effective at removing humidity. and work well here in humid florida. however i enjoy sleeping with a large floor standing fan blowing on me with my a/c off. I like the white noise it provides. google "portable ac units" to learn much much more. move your bed or turn it around and buy a window mount ac. they cheap $ 120. but you need to pay a little extra to get a quite one. google "window ac" to learn more about sizes and $. sleep well and prosper.

Are cool or cosy ducted reverse cycle air conditioners good?

We are looking at getting air con installed in our house and have had a quote for 10 outlet, 14kw, 2 zone air con. Are cool or cosy air cons good quality, are they quiet etc and what price would be reasonable?

We live in hot Texas and have to use air conditioners most of the time. But it does get cold enough in the winter for heat. We have an outdoor unit that the cold air is drawn into the house through ducts with vents in each room. This keeps the whole house cool.

We have recently bought and had installed an air conditioner that also give out heat in the winter. There is a special wall thermostat for this type of unit.

It all runs on electricity.

I hope this will help you to look at all types of units before you buy. They need to be replaced with new air conditioning units about every ten years or so depending on how often you will be using your’s. We use our’s 24 – 7 for about 9 months.
