SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Cooler
Amazon.com
Versatile, lightweight, and economical, this evaporative air cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in the home or office. Unlike a fan that blows hot air and more energy efficient than an air conditioner, the appliance uses water to cool a personal space up to 12 degrees lower than the ambient temperature. The air cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat). The unit sucks air through a wick saturated with water; as the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. A cool air stream then gets blown out the front of the unit through oscillating louvers for even distribution. The appliance can also be used as (more…)

My electricity keeps going out ever since I installed a new wall air conditioner?
I keep having to flip the breaker. I have to flip it ‘less’ often now that I unplugged a mini fridge from a connecting outlet..(leaving me with no fridge in my room)
I had this problem with an old wall unit years ago too. This happens in other areas of my home also but they do not matter so much because I don’t need to run things as often or constantly in them.
I do not have central air.
I am starting to get very concerned because I came home today to find an extension cord that is coming from an outlet also on the same breaker had caught on fire leaving a big black spot on my hardwood floor and melting the end of the cord and the power brick that comes off of it. Thank God it did not start a huge fire when I was not home.
What is causing all these power problems and how can I prevent them while also being able to stay cool and have all my stuff plugged in?
nicole – I had the same exact problem with air conditioner/hairdryer back when I use to blow dry my hair more often!
This is an older house from the 50′s.
Thank you both, I will just call an electrician I suppose.
flerce – It would be a great idea if I could just have someone switch around what goes to what breaker! This one is used a lot and spans: 2 floors, 3 rooms and even the outdoor flood light! There are many breakers that never get much get use in the house. Good idea. Thanks
Chances are that it was the extension cord, power brick, or something plugged into them that was causing the breaker to trip, and not the A/C, except maybe in combination.
The fact that the extension cord burned means that there was either a short in the cord, or a short in the power brick, or else there was a high draw device plugged in to the power brick that overloaded the cord. In either case it would cause the breaker to trip, especially in combination with the added load of the A/C.
I’m betting that the A/C will coexist fine with the fridge now that the cord and power brick are gone (if either one was shorted) or if whatever was plugged in to the power brick is kept off the A/C and fridge circuit.
