Air Conditioner / Air handler replacement – 2 Ton Unit?
I was quoted a price today of 4300.00 to replace the outside compressor (leaked 5 pounds of refrigerant in 3 days) and the air handler unit under the house (I guess to match the compressor). Electrical and ductwork will all be reused. They are installing a Goodman 2 ton unit (13 Seer rating).
Does this seem like a reasonable price for a turnkey installation?
Get more quotes. Find out just what is leaking, could be just a bad copper line or solder joint.
Goodman is the bottom line in the HVAC industry (cheapest stuff out there) and you will get what you pay for!
Check out the company with the BBB and ask for references.
Get a quote for Rheem or Ruud equipment, a lot better quality stuff.
Goodman, Rheem, or Heil heating and air units?
We are considering gettin new heater and air conditioner, we are torn between goodman, rheem and heil
does anyone know which is the most reliable?
what would you go with and why?
I assume that you have done some homework already, based on the fact that you have narrowed it down to these three choices. I have over the years serviced and installed all three units you have listed. From a quality standpoint I would rate all three about the same. So from the standpoint of a heating contractor and service tech, it boils down to how I’m treated by the manufacture when I need technical info as well as when I need parts. With that being said, Heil stands out as the winner in my book. Heil stands behind their product as well as their installers. I have never waited more than one day to get any part for any Heil furnace. Heil also offers technical assistance to installers and service tech’s that goes far beyond the other brands you mention. But, to reiterate, I don’t feel the Heil product itself is any better than the others it’s all just a matter of service after the sale.
Air Conditioner not cooling. Too much or too little freon?
Goodman Manufactoring Company
Model CK24-18
Serial 9807510241
Compressor was replaced 2-3 years ago
Inside coils replaced 1-2 years ago
In all the years I’ve had the unit (since 1998), it has never cooled the house. House has double pane windows and 8 inches rockwool and 4 inches corning (pink rolls) on top.
Now it’s "in the toilet". pipes outside were warm and dry. Temp outside was 98F and inside 85F and air in vent 78F. Next day, pipes outside are 1 1/2 inches of ice. Air still flowing across inside coils. Temp exactly the same. hvac guy comes out and charges with freon. Waited 3 hours. Temp outside 98F, inside 92F, air in vent 77F after running ac 2 hours. Pipes outside (big one) barely cool to touch, small line feel like "air temp".
In early spring, inside coils would ice over about once a week. Air would not flow over coils. Shut it off an hour then turn it on, works. Even then, outside 90, inside 80, in vent 75.
Help
This is in the Dallas-Fort Worth area – yeah humidity is a mother. It is a moderate 3 bedroom house.
The A/C guy put in 5 lbs of freon – just found out how much. Seems a lot. At this point i’m suspecting 2 problems: leak and puny 2 ton. For some reason, I thought it was 3 ton. A/C guy going to try to come back Saturday $$$$$.
Right now (10:45 PM), outside 88F, inside 87F, vent 74F.
you have a 2 ton unit which may be undersized.
since you just had it serviced, call them back and tell them its still acting up. they should recheck for nothing, i would. have them check the temp from the return filter and then check about a foot above the coil on the inside. you should have 15 low to 20 high temp difference between the two
look over their shoulder to see the temps for yourself bc you re wasting alot of money for cooling costs you re not getting.
if you re freezing up just after they left, you obviously have a leak. it wont be your filter bc they definitely would have checked that. recheck the refrigerant, make sure your suction pressure is in the 75 to 85 range if its in the daylight sun. thats the bigger of the two copper lines. again, look over their shoulder, sounds like they dont know what they re doing or they re just not very reputable.
Why isn’t my air conditioner cooling?
My brand new Goodman central unit is not working. There is no air coming from the vents and the part that takes in air is not sucking. Please help, it is really hot. I just got the thing at the beginning of summer.
Evilest_Wendy, it is 1:00 am and I have 3 small sleeping children. While it is under warranty, I don’t believe the store is open. And, it is a central unit, therefore not so easy to just take back to the store.
Both the outdoor and indoor units are running. For a little while this morning it started blowing again. That was after I had the fan on for a while. I now have it off completely.
Okay, problem solved. My father-in-law is my A/C man. He used a different refrigerant in 4 units including mine when he installed it and now all 4 have gotten a leak. There reason it was not blowing is because it froze up due to low refigerant. He charged it and is coming back to find the leak this week. Thanks for those who had actual advise.
It was not installed incorrectly. The refrigerant is the culprit.
Does the indoor fan only come on?
If no, then there may be a problem with the low voltage supply, likely the transformer located in the indoor unit.
So, both indoor and outdoor are running ?
If there is a little cold air coming out of the vents but not very strongly, the evaporator may be freezing up. When that happens the ice prevents air from passing through it.
A freezing evaporator is caused by low refrigerant due to a leak.
The short term repair is for an ac company to re-charge your system with more refrigerant.
A brand new unit should not have this problem, therefore, I suggest that it was installed incorrectly and the ac company should stand behind their work and repair this wo charge.
Which Central Air Conditioner should I go with?
4 Ton Goodman 16 Seer $5100.00
4 Ton Goodman 13 Seer $3300.00
4 Ton Trane Unit 13 Seer $3600.00
Go for the Trane. I’m speaking from personal experience because my company used to offer both. We dropped Goodman a couple years ago simply because the warranty work was not worth it. We spent more time fixing them than installing them. They’re louder, they’re less efficient and poorly built.
Examples: Goodman uses plastic caps on their service ports which are infamous for freon leaks. That saves the company pennies per unit but costs the customer hundreds in the long run unless they’re changed out. Not to mention damage done to the ozone layer. Trane usues brass caps from the factory.
Most of the screws used to hold the unit together end up vibrating loose and cause a heck of a lot of noise. Try and tighten them up and you’ll strip it making matters worse.
From a technical stand point, Goodmans are lucky to get an 18 degree temperature split. That’s the difference between the air coming in compared to the air coming out. Trane will give you 20 degrees. That may not seem like a lot but it means the Trane will run less to get the same result meaning higher efficiency.
If efficiency is the main concern, the difference between the 13 SEER and 16 SEER isn’t that much. If the house is tight, newer windows, good insulation in the walls and attic, tight exterior doors etc. you won’t notice much of a difference in operating costs. In houses less than 2500 square feet or so it’s really not worth going high efficiency, it would take forever to offset the additional cost
Bottom line is Trane is a better product. They also offer a 14 SEER that will still be cheaper than the 16 SEER Goodman and a much better buy. Keep in mind that the salesman is working on commission.

I guess it depends on where you live. We charge less than that to replace the whole condenser and the airhandler. About $3900.00 for a 2 ton unit.
Air Conditioner BRANDS?
I am trying to get quotes on air conditioners. I’ve heard that Trane and Lennox are good. I’ve heard that Goodman is not so good? Does anyone have bad experiences with any of these? The Trane quote (includes: condensing unit, A coil, labor, and tax) is $2,491 with a 5 year parts warranty. The Goodman quote (same things included) is $2,110 with a 10 year parts warranty. I’m just nervous about the goodman. Any advice?
I don’t believe I have ever seen this close a quote between Trane and Goodman for the same BTU etc. Would go with Trane for sure if SEER, BTU, Refrigerant, etc. the same.
Air Conditioner does not cool house below 72 F? Any ideas?
1. Newly built 2 storey house – 3300 sq ft
2. All ducts, furnace cleaned professionally
3. 3.5 tonne Goodman 14 SEER with R1410 gas installed last Thursday
4. Unit does not cool house below 72 degrees
5. Air is coming from the vents, but temp in house will not drop.
6. Location – Toronto Canada.
to begin with at 500 to 750 sq ft per ton your unit is way undersized…even if they did a load calculation and figured the heat gain/loss of your home this is to small a unit…at 750 sq ft per ton (the highest sq ft per ton anyone should have) you would need 41/2 tons of air conditioning…what i would do is install a 2 ton unit for the upstairs and you will be able to keep house cool…or even have them come back and install the unit your house really needs
